Moldovan Democratic Party blames Communist authorities of abuses

06 November 2008

There are premises that the outcome of the 2009 parliamentary election in Moldova will not be validated, with the local political scene abounds in examples of derogation from the principle of honest and democratic electoral competition. The first deputy leader of the Moldovan Democratic Party (PDM), Oleg Serebrian, and PDM deputy leader, Oazu Nantoi, told a news conference on Wednesday, 5 November.

Serebrian recalled that even international institutions reacted to the events in Moldova, pointing out the recommendations of the Vienna Commission and the joint Moldova-EU parliamentary council. Yet, he highlighted the lack of any reaction from the Moldovan opposition and said that Strasbourg and Brussels is waiting for its joint position.

The PDM leaders said that the current state of things practically cancels the legitimacy of the 2009 parliamentary election given that the Communist authorities offer no equal conditions to all political contenders. The lack of conditions for holding the 2009 parliamentary election legally and democratically can be seen in the subordination by the governance of the public media outlets and in the use of budget money for electoral purposes, etc.

Serebrian and Nantoi reiterated the need for a dialogue between the opposition parties, including to monitor the pre-electoral campaign. “A month ago, the Democratic Party launched the initiative for the opposition parties to create a monitoring board, but unfortunately the idea has not been backed,” Serebrian said.

Nantoi said that the officially deetatized media outlets have been manipulating and misinforming the public opinion and noted that the opposition is barred from the public television and radio. “My friends in Moldova One TV channel said I am on „the black list” and hence no report about my activity is broadcast,” Nantoi said. He specified that the Democratic Party alongside other opposition parties are subjected to a genuine informational blockade by the same media outlets.
