Kalman Mizsei: Abkhazia, South Ossetia no precedent for Transnistrian conflict

03 September 2008

Abkhazia and South Ossetia should not be a precedent as they represent the violation of the international legislation and the international relations. The Transnistrian conflict has its peculiarities and we should take them into account. At the same time, the EU keeps a close eye on the events in Georgia and on Monday it directly rebuked the recognition of the independence of the two regions. EU Special representative for Moldova, Kalman Mizsei said this after a meeting with leaders of the Moldovan parliamentary factions, which was focused on the EU’s position on the situation in Georgia.

The EU hopes that Russia will display copnstructivism inh the settlement of the conflict, he said. Mizsei said that Brussels backs the settlement of the Transnistrian conflioct within the five-plus-two negotiations. Refferring to the possibbility of returning to the Kozak Memorandum [Russian document providing for Moldova;s federa;ization to settle the Dneister conflict, rejected by Modlova in 2003], Mizsei said that it has many serious problems which would not allow the EU to recognise any settlement based on it.

After the meeting with Kalman Mizsei, the leader of the Democratic Party, Duimitru Diacov told journalists that Modlova should take advantage of the situation created in the Caucasus in order to solve its problems. To this end, Modlova should ensure the organisation of free and democratic parliamentary election in 2009 so that the next leadership be regarded as reliable by Europe. He also expressed his conviction that there will be almost no novelties in the Tranmsnistrian issue before the election and said that it is necessary to be patient and pragmatic.

The leader of the Our Moldova Alliance, Serafim Urechean, believes that the situation in the Caucasus is favourable to the Transnistrian conflict settlement. For Moldova, it is very important not to lose time and to do its best to find a mechanism of settling the conflict. „Presently, this is a favourable situation and Russia will be coerced into finding a model of solving the Transnistrian problem,” he said.

The deputy leader of the Christian Democratic Popular Party, Vlad Cubreacov, said that no parallels can be drawn between the situation in Transnistria, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, on the one hand, and Kosovo, on the other hand.

Touching upon the discussion with Kalman Mizsei, he said that they were focused on the EU-Moldova bilateral relations and the need to conclude a new document as soon as possible on a more advanced partnership providing form Moldova’s integration into the EU.

The meeting was attended by no representative of the Communist parliamentary faction.
